With so many clients being some shade of brunette, there are tons of opportunities to play with color, incorporate the latest trends, and create gorgeous multi-faceted hues in the salon.

Redken introduced three new techniques to help create amazing brunette transformations for your guests. Redken Global Color Director Josh Wood (@joshwoodcolour) has created three custom techniques: Color Blocking, Foils and Tri-Color Balayage. They’re inspired by the architecture of the hair and designed to help you take your brunettes to the next level.

Read on to discover more on each technique, and to see how you can apply them behind the chair with a few gorgeous interpretations by Redken Educator Spencer Henry (@spencerhenry).

Color Blocking for Short Hair:

Color blocking is great for short hair thanks to the layering of different tones to create depth and dimension. It gives you the versatility to showcase different tonalities in a small area while being both subtle and expressive. Get more details on the technique here >

Foils for Medium Hair:

On medium lengths, foil placement can be used to create an optical illusion. Keep the foils off of the root to give a more modern, lower maintenance look while still creating high impact from the isolation of the colors. Get more details on the technique here >

Tri-Color Balayage for Long Hair:

The Tri-Colored Balayage technique is perfect for adding interest to long hair. Placing three different tones on one pre-lightened section acts like a spotlight, creating bands or strobes of lighter color on the long canvas. Get more details on the technique here >
