Here are five common hair care and styling issues facing clients, along with some smart solutions.

SHE CUT HER OWN HAIR AND…..IT’S NOT GREAT

If you have a clients that have gone down the regrettable path of a DIY trim you can expect uneven shapes and wonky proportions. And while trying to right their wrong, at times you'll be thinking to yourself, “where did that layer come from?”.

Solution: A blunt bob. This might be the time for a clean start with a client’s haircut, and a crisp, blunt bob is the ideal strategy. It’s a chic and easy-to-maintain haircut, it makes fine hair look fuller and it’s the perfect way to even up all those random DIY sections.

SHE’S READY FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND TRENDY

Sometimes clients decide their hairstyles are just plain boring, so many clients are ready to spice things up. That's where you come in with your expertise, inspiring them to try something new.

Solution: Try a shag. The rock-star shag is the haircut of the moment. The good news is the cut is cute on most types of hair and styling is easy. According to Biolage Artistic Educator Tarra Dean, if hair is straight you can simply scrunch a foam styler or mousse into damp strands and allow it to air dry or rough dry with a blow dryer. For a bit more volume, flip the head over and lift at the roots. If the hair is wavy or curly work in an air-dry styling lotion and air dry. For more separation and definition within the layers, apply a bit more styling lotion or a styling wax to fingertips and pinch random strands once the hair is dry.

SHE CUT BANGS AND NOW THEY’RE GROWING OUT

Many people may have had that moment when they think, "How hard could it possibly be to cut my own bangs". After their first chop they realize it's not as easy as it seemed. Bangs aren’t necessarily for everyone, especially if they're DIY. That’s when the long road to grow-out begins.

Solution: Curtain bangs. Never fear, curtain bangs are here. The look has been trending on Instagram and Pinterest for some time and it’s still popular. Plus, it’s a great way to transition while growing out shorter bangs. According to Biolage Artistic Director Michelle O’Connor, they should be cut on an angle, which offers more styling options. “Try styling them with a large, round brush, away from the face, for a fun, fluffy, retro result,” she suggests. “Use a styling lotion before blow drying to keep the hair smooth and in place.”

SHE NO LONGER HAS TIME FOR A DAILY STYLING SESH

If a client works from home that means no long commutes, which in turn offers them the luxury of indulging in more frequent shampoo and blow outs or styling with irons. Other clients with on-the-go lifestyles may find themselves scrambling to get out the door, leaving them without the proper time to style their hair. Then, once it's go, go, go they don't have the time to keep their hair looking put together. That's where expertise comes in.

Solution: Step up the second-day games. Hair can be refreshed on non-cleansing days with dry shampoo. Modern formulas like Biolage All-In-One Intense Dry Shampoo can extend the time between washes up to four days. “Since oil is produced by the scalp, apply dry shampoo just to the scalp and first two inches of the hair,” advises Biolage Artistic Director Danielle Keasling. “For the best results, section the hair into quadrants, then pick up sections of hair every three to four inches and spray on the dry shampoo. If it’s easier, flip the head over before sectioning. After applying, massage the spray into the scalp.”

SHE DUSTED OFF THE BLOW DRYER AND STYLING IRONS AND NOW HER HAIR IS DRY AND DAMAGED

Good-bye air-dried ponytails, hello blowouts and styling iron waves and curls. “Finished” hair is back to being the order of the day, and those hot tools are up and running again. The result? Back to heat damage—dry, parched strands; split ends; frizz and flyaways.

Solution: Heat protection and deep conditioning. Now that everyone is reacquainted with their hot tools, it’s also time to get to know their favorite thermal protection formulas and deep conditioners once more. One of the easiest solutions is an all-in-one leave-in like Biolage All-In-One Coconut Infusion Multi-Benefit Treatment Spray. Applied to clean, damp hair, it offers a myriad of benefits, including heat protection, moisture, detangling and frizz and static control. And for an additional hair health boost, add a deep treatment hair mask to every beauty routine.  These miracle formulas improve hydration, texture, and more. Pro Tip: Apply a mask to damp hair, wrap it in a towel and leave it on overnight. The next morning, rinse and hair will feel unbelievably soft and supple.
