For textured hair clients, having their hair relaxed is a service that requires frequent visits to the salon for touch-ups. So, adding a relaxer service to your menu is a great way to cater to and support those clients looking for a more permanent style shift. In this article, MIZANI Technical Director Evie Johnson (@contactevie), will show you howto relax a client’s hair using MIZANI’s Butter Blend System.

Make sure your guest has not shampooed their hair for 72 hours prior to the appointment. Using a wide tooth comb, detangle for an even and smooth relaxer application.

Next section the hair in quadrants.

While sectioning, examine the client’s scalp for any abrasions.

To protect the scalp, use Mizani Butter Blend Base along the hairline. This will protect the scalp and prime the hair for relaxing. Made with cocoa butter, shea butter and honey, hair will feel shinier and flake free. Open up the quadrant sections and apply Mizani Butter Blend Base throughout.

Follow up with Mizani Honey Shield, a protective pre-treatment that deeply moisturizes brittle hair that is prone to breakage.

With a spray bottle, apply to the ends of previously relaxed hair. Evenly distribute with fingers. Apply in small sections and repeat.

Choose the relaxer best fit for your client’s texture type. If your guest has color-treated hair or has a finer hair type, use the Fine/Color-Treated formula. For thicker hair, use the Normal/Medium formula. When applying the relaxer, start at the most resistant parts of the hair. Do not apply product onto scalp, and leave a half-inch space between the scalp and the start of the relaxer.

Apply the relaxer to the rest of the regrowth, keeping half an inch away from the scalp.

To smooth out the relaxer, use either the tail of your brush or fingers to evenly distribute. Go back over each section to ensure an even application.

Do not over process the hair, use the recommended relaxer time. When ready to rinse, start with the section where you first applied the relaxer. Double check and open up the hair to make sure all of the relaxer is removed.

After the hair is free of relaxer, it’s time to restore the natural pH levels of the hair with Bond pHorce. Use 15mL of the Recovery Concentrate mixed with 3 ounces of distilled water. Apply to the new growth only and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Next apply the Fortifying Treatment to the same area and rinse after 10 minutes. This protein-based treatment will neutralize pH while strengthening the strands and adding shine.

Then use the Balancing Hair Bath which has a color indicator. Rinse until the suds are white. Finally, use a Mizani conditioner and rinse before styling.
